SOC101 Utah State Symbolic Interactionism in Beauty and The Beast Paper
Humanities
Students will choose a Disney movie from the list below and analyze it using a sociological theory. For this assignment, the student must complement their understanding of the theory with at least two academic articles. The paper must demonstrate comprehension of the theory and the students ability to synthesize the movie and provide an in-depth sociological analysis.
The student will be required to submit a brief description of their idea for this paper in the weeks prior to the due date of the assignment in order to get feedback on the best way to approach the theory and the movie. Please remember that there are many ways to analyze a movie; you can focus on the interactions that take place, specific characters, the whole plot, the directors approach to the story, the storyline itself, and even Disney as a corporation. You are free to choose the approach that you find the most engaging. Use the academic articles to support your arguments.
Disney Movies: Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, The Lion King, Frozen, Moana, Pocahontas, Lilo and Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Tangled, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, The Emperors New Groove, Atlantis. No second parts of movies (example: Mulan II, The Return of Jafar, etc). Other non-Disney acceptable movies: Coco, How to Train your Dragon, Monsters inc.
The paper shall be 4 pages long (not less). Double space, Times New Roman 12, Margins 1.
For the 2 academic journal articles you may use the following journals:
Annual Review of Sociology
American Sociological Review
Sociological Methods & Research
American Journal of Sociology
Rural Sociology
Social Science Research
Society and Natural Resources
Social Problems
Access to those journals is provided by the USU Library. Visit: https://library.usu.edu/inabs/ (Links to an external site.) I personally like JSTOR. You can also find academic articles using https://scholar.google.com/ (Links to an external site.) The book also provides academic articles that you can access to complement each chapter.
